Stone Oak, North San Antonio’s Center

Area Description

Stone Oak is what I think of as far North San Antonio’s center. The major road that defines Stone Oak geographically is Stone Oak

Parkway. This major artery begins at Loop 1604 and continues north for about three miles then changes to an east-west  road that terminates
at US Highway 281. Stone Oak Parkway is about six miles in length with two lanes for each direction.

Geography

One can enter the Stone Oak area from Loop 1604 (south), Huebner Road (west), Sonterra (east), or US Highway 281 (north). Many living in San
Antonio consider Stone Oak Parkway a real traffic nightmare at rush hour. I will admit, it is congested, but I don’t think it’s anywhere
near the congestion faced by people in certain areas of Dallas, Houston, or Austin. But I guess it’s just what one becomes accustomed. It does not seem that bad too me.

Homes

There are over forty subdivisions, condominium and apartment complexes in the Stone Oak area. During the past three (3) months, sold home prices in the Stone Oak area have ranged between

$156,000 and $569,000. Median price for sold homes in the area was $270,000.

As of July 11, there are around 400 homes and condos available for sale in the Stone Oak
area, asking prices range from $159,000 to $639,000. Many of the homes in the Stone Oak area are in gated communities and have a Home Owners Association, neighborhood amenities, and dues for the upkeep and maintenance of those amenities.

Schools

Northeast Independent School District (NEISD) serves the Stone Oak area. NEISD is the second largest district in Bexar County. Currently four (4)
elementary schools, two (2) middle schools, and one high school serve the area.

Commercial Activities in Stone Oak

Much of the growth in San Antonio over the past few years has occurred in the north central area of San Antonio. Retail shops containing a variety of products and services are strategically located throughout the Stone Oak area. Medical and dental practices, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and veterinary services are also within the Stone Oak area. Restaurants: from fast food, to upscale can be found in the Stone Oak area. You’ll never go hungry in Stone Oak for lack of a place to eat.

If you have a personal care need, there are several shops to handle your issue in Stone Oak, Hair salons and barbers, nail salons, cleaners and laundry, banks, and speciality stores can be found on many of the major intersections on Stone Oak Parkway.

Although not within Stone Oak proper, H-E-B, Super Target, Costco and Wal-Mart are not far from Stone Oak. There are also few service stations in the area. From my observations, gas prices at these locations tend to be higher than many other sites in the area.

Mass Transit

One thing the Stone Oak area lacks is an efficient mass transit system.We do like our own personal vehicles in Texas. Most of us like to come and go as we please so riding a bus is not something most of us want to do. So the transit system we have, VIA, does not have good coverage in terms of number of routes, and frequency of  buses in the Stone Oak area. So I’m not sure if this a solvable situation in the short run. Without more riders, VIA cannot afford to increase the number of routes and buses for the area. And without more buses and routes, potential riders will avoid the VIA system because it takes too long to get to their destinations.
